Authorities in Uttarakhand have stepped up security measures across key routes leading to Hemkund Sahib following recent tensions involving a group of Nihang Sikhs attempting to enter the state. Officials say the enhanced deployment is aimed at ensuring the safety of pilgrims, maintaining public order, and preventing any disruption during the ongoing pilgrimage season.
Police presence has been significantly increased at border checkpoints, major highways, and sensitive locations connected to the Hemkund Sahib route. Security personnel are conducting regular vehicle inspections and monitoring movement to ensure that law and order remains under control.
According to officials, the precautionary arrangements were put in place after a Nihang Sikh group announced its intention to travel towards Uttarakhand in connection with an ongoing dispute related to religious sites in Karnaprayag and Nagrasu. While discussions were held with members of the group at the state border, a small section reportedly moved past police barricades, prompting authorities to strengthen surveillance across nearby areas.
Senior officials have emphasized that the administration is committed to resolving the situation peacefully. Police teams have been instructed to exercise restraint while ensuring that no action compromises public safety. Authorities have also appealed to all concerned groups to cooperate with law enforcement and avoid any activities that could disturb communal harmony.
The security arrangements extend beyond the state border. Additional personnel have been deployed at strategic points along the pilgrimage route, while local intelligence units have been asked to remain alert and share real-time information with district authorities. Officials say these measures are purely preventive and are intended to facilitate a safe and uninterrupted pilgrimage for thousands of devotees visiting Hemkund Sahib.
The recent developments follow an incident reported earlier this month in Karnaprayag, where a dispute involving a group of Nihang Sikhs and local residents allegedly turned violent. The confrontation resulted in injuries to several individuals, following which police registered a case and arrested multiple suspects. The incident prompted the administration to reassess security arrangements in the region and prepare for any possible escalation.
Officials have urged residents and pilgrims not to believe rumours circulating on social media and to rely only on verified information issued by the administration. They have also warned that spreading false or inflammatory content online could lead to legal action under applicable laws.
The Uttarakhand government has reiterated that while the right to peaceful religious practices is respected, maintaining law and order remains the administration’s highest priority. Authorities have stated that any individual or group found violating legal provisions or attempting to create unrest will face appropriate action in accordance with the law.
Pilgrims travelling to Hemkund Sahib have been advised to follow official travel advisories, cooperate with security personnel during inspections, and avoid unnecessary gatherings at sensitive locations. Despite the heightened security, officials have confirmed that the pilgrimage is continuing smoothly and that no restrictions have been imposed on regular devotees.
