A ceiling fan falling inside a government hospital has triggered fresh concerns about infrastructure maintenance and patient safety after a 42-year-old patient died hours after the incident at Delhi’s Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital.
While the patient’s family has linked the incident to negligence and demanded a thorough investigation, hospital authorities have maintained that the death resulted from the patient’s pre-existing critical medical condition and was not caused by the falling fan.
Incident Raises Questions Over Hospital Maintenance
According to hospital officials, the incident occurred on Saturday night in Ward 27 when a ceiling fan detached from the roof and fell inside one of the patient cubicles. Medical staff immediately attended to the patient, and the damaged fan was later replaced.
The incident has nevertheless raised concerns among patients and attendants regarding the condition of infrastructure in one of Delhi’s largest government hospitals.
Family Seeks Accountability
The deceased patient’s relatives have called for an independent inquiry, alleging that the accident reflects poor maintenance standards. They argue that hospitals should regularly inspect equipment such as ceiling fans, electrical fittings, and other facilities to prevent avoidable accidents.
Family members have urged authorities to determine whether adequate safety inspections had been carried out before the incident.
Eyewitnesses Describe the Scene
People present in the ward claimed the ceiling fan suddenly came loose and landed on or near the patient’s bed, creating panic among patients and attendants. Some also alleged that several air-conditioning units in the ward were not functioning properly, making ceiling fans the primary source of ventilation.
These claims have not been independently verified.
Hospital Rules Out Fan as Cause of Death
GTB Hospital, however, has rejected allegations that the ceiling fan caused the patient’s death.
In its official statement, the hospital said the patient had been admitted in an unconscious condition with multiple serious medical complications, including uncontrolled hypertension, neurological illness, aspiration pneumonia, and respiratory failure.
Doctors reportedly examined the patient immediately after the incident and found no evidence of major external injuries. Based on the clinical assessment, the hospital concluded that the death was related to the patient’s underlying medical condition.
Technical Inspection Underway
Hospital authorities said the Public Works Department (PWD) inspected the site soon after the incident. A preliminary examination found that the fan’s shaft had fractured, leading to its collapse.
Officials described the failure as unusual and said a detailed technical investigation has been initiated to determine how the equipment failed.
Focus on Patient Safety
The incident has renewed attention on the importance of regular maintenance in public healthcare facilities. Experts say routine inspections of electrical fixtures, ceiling-mounted equipment, and other infrastructure are essential to ensure patient safety and avoid preventable accidents.
