As the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) approaches its 29th foundation day, the party is witnessing unprecedented internal turbulence triggered by an unresolved leadership succession battle. With Chief Minister and party supremo Naveen Patnaik yet to name a political heir, the question of who will emerge as the party’s second-in-command has become the most contentious issue within BJD’s power corridors.
Growing Rift Within BJD Leadership
Political observers believe that an intense behind-the-scenes contest has begun between VK Pandian—widely regarded as the party’s de facto power centre—and his close associate Pranab Prakash Das, popularly known as Bobby. While Bobby is actively mobilising his loyalists and holding meetings across different locations to consolidate influence, Pandian and his wife Sujata have reportedly maintained a noticeable distance from Naveen Niwas in recent days.
This sudden absence has sparked widespread speculation within party circles, given that the Pandian couple had been regular visitors to Naveen Niwas over the past several years.
Pandian Couple’s Absence Raises Eyebrows
According to BJD insiders, VK Pandian and his wife Sujata have stayed away from Naveen Niwas for nearly two weeks. Previously, even during periods when Pandian was less visible, Sujata was frequently seen at the Chief Minister’s residence, particularly after Naveen Patnaik returned from medical treatment in Mumbai and Bhubaneswar.
Their abrupt disengagement has fueled rumours of strategic distancing. Sources suggest that Pandian may be dissatisfied with Naveen Patnaik’s reluctance to formally project Sujata as a key party leader or potential successor, prompting what many describe as “pressure politics” through deliberate withdrawal.
It is further alleged that certain party leaders sympathetic to Pandian are preparing to approach Naveen Patnaik collectively to push for Sujata’s elevation within the party hierarchy, adding to the tense atmosphere at Naveen Niwas.
Bobby’s Parallel Power Play
On the other side of the divide, Bobby—who rose rapidly during the Pandian era—is said to be executing a calculated strategy to position himself as the party’s next power centre. Reports indicate that meetings involving over 50 defeated MLAs and leaders were recently held at a farmhouse in Jhumuka, allegedly with Bobby’s backing.
Despite Naveen Patnaik’s earlier directive discouraging unofficial political gatherings outside party headquarters, these meetings are being viewed as an open challenge to central authority. Party insiders believe Bobby is leveraging dissatisfaction among leaders to push for leadership restructuring ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
Senior leaders such as Debi Prasad Mishra, Pratap Jena, Sanjay Das Burma, and Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak are also reportedly lobbying for Rajya Sabha nominations, further complicating the internal power equation.
Public Statements Add Fuel to Fire
The internal unrest has spilled into the public domain through sharp remarks by BJD MP Debashish Samantaray and former leader Shrimayee Mishra. Samantaray categorically stated that Naveen Patnaik has not declared any successor and dismissed claims that Pandian represents Odisha’s future leadership.
Meanwhile, Shrimayee Mishra used poetic satire on social media to indirectly criticise attempts to introduce new power centres within the party, alluding to factionalism, internal feasting, and opportunism.
These statements underline a growing sentiment within the party that Naveen Patnaik is unwilling to anoint any successor, even as rival factions intensify their manoeuvres.
Foundation Day Controversy Deepens Concerns
Adding to the unease, BJD’s official foundation day letter—traditionally signed by Naveen Patnaik—was circulated this year without his signature. Instead, it bore the signatures of senior leaders Debi Prasad Mishra and Pratap Jena, a move that reportedly unsettled district-level leaders.
The absence of Naveen Patnaik’s direct involvement has been interpreted by many as a sign of his displeasure with the party’s internal indiscipline and lack of strategic clarity.
An Uncertain Road Ahead
With the party’s Political Affairs Committee and core leadership yet to present a clear roadmap, the ongoing power struggle has left BJD at a crossroads. While Naveen Patnaik remains the undisputed face of the party, his silence and distancing have created space for competing factions to assert themselves.
As BJD enters its 29th year, the unresolved succession question, factional rivalries, and leadership ambitions threaten to overshadow the party’s legacy—raising a critical question: is Naveen Patnaik still firmly in control, or is the ground slowly shifting beneath him?
