West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday strongly questioned the implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, arguing before the Supreme Court that the state was being unfairly targeted.
Addressing the apex court, Banerjee said that the process was creating confusion among voters and raised serious concerns about justice and equality. She claimed that similar exercises were not being carried out uniformly across other states, which, according to her, puts West Bengal at a disadvantage.
The Chief Minister emphasized that democracy depends on free and fair electoral practices and urged the court to ensure that no state is selectively subjected to administrative actions. She also pointed out that ordinary citizens, especially those from marginalized sections, may face difficulties due to procedural complications.
The Supreme Court heard the arguments and observed that transparency and fairness must remain central to any electoral process. The matter is expected to be examined further, with the court seeking clarity on the guidelines and intent behind the SIR exercise.
The case has drawn political attention nationwide, as it touches upon broader questions of electoral integrity and equal treatment of states within the democratic framework.
