India has reiterated its strong position on agricultural trade, making it clear that no special import benefits have been extended to the United States for agricultural products. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the country is fully self-sufficient in agriculture and remains focused on protecting domestic farmers.
The minister emphasized that India’s agricultural sector is capable of meeting national demand, reducing the need for excessive imports. He said trade decisions in sensitive sectors like agriculture are taken with caution, keeping farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and long-term sustainability in mind.
Goyal underlined that while India supports fair and balanced global trade, it will not compromise its core interests. Any trade engagement with foreign nations, including the US, is evaluated strictly on the basis of national priorities and economic stability.
He also pointed out that India’s policies aim to strengthen domestic production and ensure better market access for local farmers. Offering special concessions on agricultural imports could negatively impact rural incomes and domestic supply chains, which the government wants to avoid.
The statement sends a clear message that India’s trade policy in agriculture remains farmer-centric. The government maintains that self-reliance, combined with responsible global engagement, is the foundation of its economic and trade strategy.
