AI Summit Faces Political Heat as Government Admits Lapses, Opposition Targets Management

The recently held Artificial Intelligence (AI) Summit in New Delhi has triggered a political debate after reports of technical glitches and organizational shortcomings surfaced during the high-profile event. Following the criticism, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw issued an apology, acknowledging the inconvenience caused and assuring that corrective steps would be taken in future editions.

Addressing the concerns, the minister said that organizing a large international summit involving multiple stakeholders comes with operational challenges. He emphasized that India remains committed to becoming a global leader in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and such platforms are crucial for showcasing the country’s innovation ecosystem.

However, the opposition was quick to seize the opportunity to question the government’s preparedness. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticized the Centre, calling the situation a clear case of mismanagement. He argued that when the government projects itself as a champion of Digital India and technological leadership, shortcomings at an international event send the wrong message.

Kharge further stated that global summits are not merely symbolic gatherings but reflect a country’s administrative capacity and seriousness. Any lapse, he said, risks damaging India’s image on the world stage. Opposition leaders also demanded greater accountability and better planning for future global events.

Meanwhile, government sources maintained that the core objectives of the AI Summit—policy discussions, innovation exchange, and global collaboration—were successfully achieved despite the hurdles. Political analysts believe the controversy has shifted attention from technology-driven dialogue to questions of governance, efficiency, and execution.

The episode has reignited a broader debate on whether India’s ambitious digital vision is being matched with equally strong on-ground implementation.
