Supreme Court Grants Bail to Filmmaker Vikram Bhatt in Cheating Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday granted bail to noted filmmaker Vikram Bhatt in connection with a cheating case, offering him significant interim relief. The top court observed that prolonged custodial detention is not justified when the investigation has substantially progressed and the trial is likely to take time.

While allowing the bail plea, the court imposed standard conditions to ensure the smooth conduct of the proceedings. Bhatt has been directed to cooperate fully with investigating agencies, refrain from influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence, and seek prior permission before traveling abroad. The bench clarified that the grant of bail should not be construed as an expression on the merits of the allegations and that the trial will continue in accordance with law.

The case stems from a complaint alleging cheating in a financial transaction. Bhatt had earlier failed to secure relief from lower courts and subsequently approached the Supreme Court. During the hearing, his counsel argued that the dispute is essentially civil in nature and has been given a criminal color, while also emphasizing that continued incarceration would be disproportionate.

Opposing the plea, the prosecution contended that the allegations involve serious financial impropriety and warranted custodial scrutiny. After hearing both sides, the court balanced the interests of justice with the accused’s right to personal liberty, concluding that bail with conditions would suffice at this stage.

Legal experts say the order reiterates the principle that bail is the rule and jail the exception, especially when there is no immediate risk of flight or interference with the investigation. The matter will now proceed before the trial court, where evidence and witness testimonies will determine the outcome.
