Residents of Delhi-NCR woke up to a pleasant change in weather on Sunday morning as light rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms swept across the region. The sudden shift in weather brought much-needed relief from the rising temperatures that had been troubling people over the past few days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an orange alert has been issued for the national capital and surrounding areas. The alert indicates the possibility of moderate rainfall, strong winds and lightning in several parts of the city. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious and stay updated with the latest weather information.
Early in the morning, light showers were reported from several areas across Delhi-NCR. The drizzle was accompanied by cool winds and cloudy skies, creating a refreshing atmosphere throughout the city. Many residents welcomed the change, stepping out onto balconies and terraces to enjoy the pleasant weather.
At around 7:30 am, the temperature recorded at the Safdarjung weather station — considered the base station for Delhi’s weather readings — was about 22 degrees Celsius. The drop in temperature made the morning feel cooler than usual, offering relief to people who had been experiencing warm and humid conditions in recent days.
However, the sudden rainfall also had a minor impact on traffic movement in some areas. A few roads reported water accumulation due to continuous drizzle, which slightly slowed down traffic during the early hours. Despite this, overall conditions across the city remained largely normal.
Meteorologists believe that the weather change is mainly due to the influence of western disturbances combined with local atmospheric conditions. These systems often bring cloud cover, gusty winds and intermittent rainfall to parts of northern India, including Delhi and its neighbouring regions.
The weather department has warned that such conditions may continue for the next several hours. There is a possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds in isolated pockets of the city. Residents have been advised to avoid standing under trees, near electric poles or in open fields during thunderstorms.
Officials also stressed the importance of taking safety precautions during lightning activity. People are encouraged to remain indoors as much as possible and secure loose objects on rooftops or balconies that could be blown away by strong winds.
Apart from providing relief from heat, the rainfall has also improved the overall air quality and reduced dust levels in several parts of the region. Environmental experts say such weather conditions can temporarily improve air conditions, making the environment more comfortable for residents.
Health experts, however, recommend that people remain cautious during sudden weather changes. Rapid fluctuations in temperature and humidity can sometimes lead to seasonal illnesses such as colds, coughs and viral infections, especially among children and elderly citizens.
