As global energy markets face increasing volatility due to geopolitical tensions, India is actively reassessing its strategy to secure a stable supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). With disruptions in traditional supply routes and growing concerns over availability, discussions around increasing LPG imports from Russia have gained momentum. The government has reiterated that ensuring uninterrupted fuel access for citizens remains its top priority.
Speaking on the issue, Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that India is closely monitoring global developments and is prepared to take necessary steps to safeguard its energy needs. He noted that the country is exploring multiple sourcing options to avoid overdependence on any single region, especially at a time when geopolitical risks are high.
The ongoing tensions in the Middle East have significantly impacted global energy supply chains. Key maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, have witnessed instability, raising concerns about timely shipments of oil and gas. For a country like India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its energy demands, such disruptions can have a direct impact on domestic supply and pricing.
In this context, Russia has emerged as a potential alternative supplier for LPG. Over the past few years, energy cooperation between India and Russia has strengthened, especially in crude oil trade. However, experts caution that increasing LPG imports from Russia is not without challenges. Welfare schemes aimed at providing subsidized cooking gas to economically weaker sections will continue without interruption.
