Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s recent visit to New Delhi has triggered widespread political discussion across the country. In his first official trip to the national capital after taking office, the actor-turned-politician held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Union ministers while also planning interactions with opposition leaders. Although his scheduled meeting with Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi was postponed, political observers believe the visit itself marks the beginning of Vijay’s larger national political ambitions.
Vijay rose to power after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest force in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party later formed a coalition government with the support of Congress, Left parties and regional allies, creating the state’s first major coalition arrangement in decades. His rapid rise from cinema icon to chief minister has already reshaped Tamil Nadu politics, and his Delhi outreach is now being viewed as an attempt to expand his influence beyond the state.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vijay reportedly discussed several important issues concerning Tamil Nadu. One of the key topics was the controversial Mekedatu dam project linked to the Cauvery river dispute. Vijay expressed concern over Karnataka’s proposed plans and said the issue has caused anxiety among Tamil Nadu farmers who depend heavily on Cauvery water for agriculture.
The chief minister also raised the issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by Sri Lankan authorities. According to officials, dozens of fishermen remain in custody while many fishing boats have also been seized. Vijay urged the Centre to take stronger diplomatic and humanitarian steps to secure their release and protect the livelihood of coastal communities.
Another issue highlighted during the discussions was the controversy surrounding the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, the traditional Tamil invocation song. Vijay reportedly emphasised that Tamil Nadu has always respected national symbols and constitutional values while also preserving its own cultural identity and traditions.
In his meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Vijay focused on development and infrastructure projects for Tamil Nadu. He submitted proposals seeking greater central support for ports, railway projects, highways and industrial corridors. He also pushed for faster approval and funding of metro rail projects in growing cities such as Coimbatore, Madurai and Erode.
Political analysts believe Vijay is carefully positioning himself as a leader capable of balancing regional identity with national engagement. Instead of taking an aggressive confrontationist approach, he appears to be building communication channels with both the ruling establishment and opposition parties.
The postponement of his proposed meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi has also generated speculation. While sources describe it as a scheduling adjustment, many believe the meeting could play an important role in shaping future opposition dynamics in southern India. Congress remains an important ally in Vijay’s coalition government, making the relationship politically significant.
Observers say Vijay’s growing popularity, especially among young voters, has made him one of the most closely watched regional leaders in India today. His transition from cinema to politics has drawn comparisons with several iconic southern political figures, but analysts note that his political style appears more focused on governance, development and coalition-building.
