Aizawl: In a significant judgment highlighting the seriousness of crimes against women, a court in Mizoram has sentenced two suspended Border Security Force (BSF) personnel to 42 years of rigorous imprisonment each for their involvement in a gang rape and acid attack case that dates back to 2017.
The verdict was delivered by the Additional District and Sessions Court in Aizawl after an extensive trial spanning several years. The two accused, identified as Nilanjan Das and Dinesh Kumar, were found guilty under multiple provisions of the Indian Penal Code for committing gang rape, causing grievous bodily harm during the assault, and carrying out an acid attack on the victim.
According to the court’s order, both convicts have been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for gang rape. In addition, they have been awarded 10 years of imprisonment for causing severe physical injuries during the crime and another 12 years for the acid attack. The court directed that these sentences would run consecutively, resulting in a total imprisonment period of 42 years for each convict.
Besides the prison term, the court imposed a fine of ₹60,000 on each convict. Failure to pay the penalty would attract additional imprisonment as per the provisions laid down in the judgment.
The case originated in 2017 when a woman was allegedly subjected to a brutal assault involving gang rape and an acid attack, leaving her with severe physical and emotional trauma. The incident drew widespread concern due to the nature of the crime and the fact that the accused were serving members of a security force at the time. Following the allegations, both personnel were suspended from service and criminal proceedings were initiated.
During the course of the trial, the prosecution presented witness testimonies, medical evidence, and other supporting materials before the court. After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court concluded that the charges against the accused had been established beyond reasonable doubt.
Legal experts believe the judgment sends a strong message that crimes involving sexual violence and acid attacks will be dealt with firmly under the law. They note that consecutive sentencing in such serious offences reflects the judiciary’s intention to ensure proportionate punishment and reinforce deterrence against violent crimes.
Women’s rights advocates have also welcomed the decision, stating that strict punishments are essential not only to deliver justice to survivors but also to strengthen public confidence in the judicial system. They have emphasized the importance of timely investigations, victim support mechanisms, and social awareness to prevent such crimes in the future.
The case has once again brought attention to the need for stronger measures to ensure women’s safety and security. Experts argue that while strict legal action is necessary, long-term change also requires education, awareness, and collective efforts to promote respect and equality in society.
