The investigation into the alleged rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur has entered a crucial phase, with authorities focusing on reconstructing the victim’s final movements and collecting scientific evidence to strengthen the case. Officials say the probe is being carried out from multiple angles to ensure that every aspect of the incident is thoroughly examined.
The girl reportedly went missing on July 4, prompting her family to begin a search before informing local police. The following day, her body was recovered from the Surjyapur Haat area, where it had allegedly been concealed inside a sack. The discovery shocked the local community and triggered widespread anger among residents.
Soon after the body was found, hundreds of people gathered in protest, demanding swift action against those responsible. Demonstrators blocked the Baruipur–Joynagar Road, burned tyres and raised slogans seeking justice for the victim. During the unrest, several police vehicles and public property were reportedly damaged, forcing security personnel to step in and restore order.
Police later arrested three suspects in connection with the case after examining CCTV footage, witness statements and other preliminary evidence. Investigators believe one of the accused was seen with the victim before she went missing, making him a key suspect in the investigation. The remaining accused are also being questioned as officials work to establish the sequence of events.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct a detailed inquiry. According to officials, the team is reviewing digital evidence, forensic findings, CCTV recordings and witness testimonies to build a comprehensive case. Investigators are also examining the movements and communication records of the accused to verify their presence during the time of the incident.
Authorities have emphasized that forensic analysis will play a critical role in the investigation. Experts are examining physical evidence collected from the crime scene, while digital data is being analysed to corroborate statements made during questioning. Officials say scientific evidence will be central to ensuring that the investigation stands up to judicial scrutiny.
The case took another tragic turn after the recovery of the girl’s body when an angry crowd allegedly assaulted a man suspected of being involved in the crime. The man later died from his injuries. Preliminary findings indicated that he may not have been connected to the case, prompting authorities to launch a separate investigation into the mob violence.
Meanwhile, the state administration has sought a detailed report on both the murder investigation and the violence that followed. Police are also identifying individuals allegedly involved in vandalising public property during the protests. Officials have stated that anyone found responsible for damaging government assets or attacking law enforcement personnel will face legal action in accordance with the law.
The incident has reignited discussions about child safety, the need for faster criminal investigations and the importance of preventing mob justice. Legal experts have pointed out that while public outrage in such cases is understandable, allowing investigations to proceed through due process is essential to ensure that the guilty are punished and innocent individuals are protected.
