With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections gradually moving into focus, political discussions over possible opposition alliances have gained momentum after AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi expressed his willingness to work with the Samajwadi Party (SP) to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Speaking at a public event in Moradabad, Owaisi said his party was prepared to hold talks with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, stressing that discussions should take place before the election campaign reaches its peak.
Owaisi Calls for Opposition Coordination
Addressing party workers and supporters, Owaisi said AIMIM’s objective is to prevent the BJP from returning to power in Uttar Pradesh. He argued that if opposition parties believe multiple candidates divide anti-incumbency votes, they should explore cooperation instead of competing against one another.
He also suggested that political dialogue should begin early rather than after election results are announced, describing pre-election discussions as a more practical approach.
Focus on Equality and Constitutional Rights
During his speech, Owaisi maintained that AIMIM’s political agenda is centred on issues of equality, justice and constitutional rights. He said the party does not view its politics as being directed against any religion and emphasised that its demand is for equal participation and representation.
According to Owaisi, any future political engagement with like-minded parties should be based on discussions around public rights and inclusive governance.
BJP Responds Sharply
The BJP criticised Owaisi’s remarks, describing the proposal as an example of “vote-bank politics.” Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla alleged that both AIMIM and the Samajwadi Party follow similar political strategies and claimed the latest outreach reflected an attempt to consolidate support ahead of the state elections.
The exchange has added a fresh political dimension to the evolving electoral landscape in Uttar Pradesh.
