2026 T20 World Cup squad announced; Gill dropped, Ishan returns

The BCCI on Saturday announced the 15-member Indian squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. While Surya Kumar Yadav is set to lead the team, Indian one-day and Test captain and T20 vice-captain Shubman Gill has not been included in it. He has been dropped due to poor performance. Akshar Patel has been made the vice-captain of the team.

Ishan Kishan and Rinku Singh have returned to the team. After their impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, they have been included in the 2026 T20 World Cup squad. Ishan Kishan has been included in the team as the second wicketkeeper along with Sanju Samson. Ishan Kishan last played a T20 match against Australia in November 2023. Similarly, he has not been included in the one-day and Test team since 2023.

Shubman Gill’s poor form in T20Is has not earned him the trust of the selectors. He has been criticised for his performance this year. He has scored just 291 runs in 15 matches at an average of 24.25. He has not scored a single half-century. In the recent T20I series against South Africa, Gill played 3 out of 5 matches. He was not in the team for the last two matches due to a foot injury. He scored 32 runs in the three matches he played. While Gill has performed well in Tests and ODIs, he has struggled in the T20 format.
