India is preparing to take a major step toward enhancing its air combat capabilities with a proposed acquisition of 114 Rafale fighter jets, a deal estimated to be worth around Rs 3.25 lakh crore. If finalized, this would become one of the largest defence procurement agreements in the country’s history.
The planned purchase is part of the Indian Air Force’s Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) programme, aimed at addressing the steady decline in operational fighter squadrons. Several legacy aircraft are nearing the end of their service life, creating an urgent need for modern, reliable platforms.
Rafale jets are widely regarded as among the most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft in the world. Equipped with cutting-edge avionics, advanced radar systems and sophisticated weapons, the aircraft are capable of carrying out air superiority, ground attack and reconnaissance missions under diverse combat conditions.
According to defence sources, the proposed deal is also expected to place strong emphasis on local manufacturing and maintenance. A significant portion of the production and lifecycle support work may be carried out in India, aligning with the government’s push for defence self-reliance and domestic industrial growth.
Security analysts believe the induction of a large fleet of Rafale jets would significantly enhance India’s deterrence posture and operational readiness. It would also help the Indian Air Force maintain a strategic edge amid evolving regional security challenges.
While official confirmation is still awaited, the deal is being closely watched as a potential game-changer for India’s long-term air defence strategy.
