Himanta Biswa Sarma officially began his second consecutive term as the Chief Minister of Assam after taking oath at a grand ceremony in Guwahati. The swearing-in event marked another major political milestone for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which has retained power in the northeastern state for a third straight term.
The ceremony, held at the Khanapara Veterinary College ground, witnessed the presence of several top national leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from multiple NDA-ruled states also attended the event, turning it into a major political gathering for the alliance.
Along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, four ministers also took oath as part of the new cabinet. Leaders from NDA allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), were given representation in the ministry. Political observers believe the BJP is trying to maintain regional balance and strengthen its coalition politics in Assam through inclusive representation.
The NDA secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections by winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP emerged as the single largest party with 82 seats, while its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each. The election results were seen as a strong endorsement of the BJP’s governance model and organisational network in the state.
Speaking after taking oath, Himanta Biswa Sarma said the new government would focus on accelerating Assam’s development journey. He highlighted infrastructure growth, employment generation, healthcare, education and industrial investment as key priorities for the coming years. He also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the state.
Sarma stated that Assam has the potential to become an economic gateway for the Northeast and said efforts would be made to attract more domestic and foreign investment. He added that the government would continue working on road connectivity, digital infrastructure and welfare schemes aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
The Chief Minister also spoke about recurring flood problems in Assam and promised long-term measures to improve flood management and river infrastructure. Agriculture, tourism and small industries are expected to receive special attention during the new term.
BJP leaders described the victory as proof of public confidence in the party’s leadership and policies. According to party leaders, development work carried out over the past few years, especially in transport, healthcare and law enforcement, played a major role in the alliance’s electoral success.
Opposition parties congratulated the new government but urged it to address rising unemployment, inflation and economic concerns affecting common people. Some opposition leaders also said the government must ensure balanced development across all regions and communities in the state.
Political analysts believe Himanta Biswa Sarma’s second term will not only shape Assam’s politics but also influence the BJP’s broader strategy in the Northeast. Over the years, Sarma has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the region and has played a key role in expanding the NDA’s presence across northeastern states.
