RG Kar Case Continues To Shake Bengal Politics As Victim’s Mother Demands Full Justice

The RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case continues to remain one of the most sensitive and politically charged issues in West Bengal. Fresh political reactions emerged after the victim’s mother and BJP MLA Ratna Debnath met Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and reiterated her demand for a deeper and more transparent investigation into the case.

The tragic incident, which took place in August 2024 inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, had sparked nationwide outrage. A 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, who was reportedly on duty that night, was found dead under disturbing circumstances inside the hospital premises. Allegations of rape, torture, and murder led to massive protests by doctors, students, and civil society groups across the country.

The case soon became a major political issue in Bengal, with opposition parties accusing the then state administration of mishandling the investigation and attempting to suppress evidence in the early stages. Public anger intensified after claims surfaced that several important leads and possible suspects had not been fully examined.

Speaking after her meeting with the Chief Minister at the state secretariat, Ratna Debnath said her life had changed completely after losing her daughter and that justice remained her only priority. She stated that becoming an MLA had not brought any happiness to her life because her personal loss could never be replaced.

She also claimed that she had submitted names and information related to the case to both investigators and the Chief Minister. According to her, several individuals may have been directly or indirectly linked to the incident, and she believes all angles must be thoroughly investigated.

Recently, Calcutta High Court ordered the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) under the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court directed the team to examine the sequence of events from the night of the incident until the victim’s cremation. Legal experts believe the order could bring new developments and clarity to the investigation.

The BJP government in the state has promised faster action in the case and assured that no guilty person would be spared. Departmental inquiries have also reportedly been initiated against certain senior police officers who were holding important positions during the time of the incident. Some officers have been suspended pending investigation.

The victim’s family has repeatedly alleged that there were attempts to weaken the case during the initial investigation phase. They have demanded accountability not only for the crime itself but also for the handling of evidence and procedural lapses.

Political tensions surrounding the case have remained high. While the BJP has projected the issue as an example of administrative failure and lack of women’s safety, the Trinamool Congress has earlier accused opposition leaders of politicising a tragic incident for electoral gain.

Beyond politics, the case has also triggered a larger national debate about workplace safety for doctors and women in healthcare institutions. Medical associations across India had earlier organised demonstrations demanding stronger security systems inside hospitals and stricter laws to protect healthcare workers.
