Vijay began his first official visit to New Delhi after assuming office as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, drawing nationwide political attention. The two-day visit is being seen not only as an administrative exercise but also as a major political step that could shape Vijay’s role in national politics in the coming years.
According to official sources, Vijay is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union ministers, and top leaders of the Congress party. The meetings are expected to focus on Tamil Nadu’s financial requirements, infrastructure projects, industrial investments, and Centre-state relations.
Political observers believe the visit reflects Vijay’s attempt to position himself as more than just a regional leader. After his dramatic electoral success in Tamil Nadu, many analysts now see him as one of the emerging faces of opposition politics in southern India.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, founded by Vijay in 2024, stunned political observers by winning 108 seats in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Although the party fell short of a simple majority in the 234-member Assembly, it formed the government with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML. The coalition marked one of the most significant political shifts in Tamil Nadu in decades.
The rise of Vijay has altered the traditional political landscape of the state, which for years had been dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. His popularity among youth, urban voters, and first-time voters played a major role in the party’s rapid growth.
Sources close to the Tamil Nadu government said Vijay is expected to request additional central assistance for transport infrastructure, industrial corridors, railway expansion, urban development, and welfare schemes. Chennai’s growing urban challenges and the need for investment in emerging sectors are also likely to be discussed during his meetings with Union ministers.
The meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being closely watched by political circles across the country. Despite ideological differences between several southern regional parties and the BJP-led central government, both sides are expected to maintain a cooperative tone focused on development and governance.
Analysts believe the interaction could also indicate how the relationship between the Centre and Tamil Nadu’s new coalition government may evolve in the future. Some experts suggest that Vijay may attempt to balance regional interests while maintaining constructive engagement with the central government.
Equally significant are Vijay’s scheduled meetings with Congress leaders. Since Congress is a key ally supporting the Tamil Nadu government, discussions are expected to include coalition coordination, opposition unity, and future political strategies at the national level.
Vijay’s transition from cinema superstar to Chief Minister has been one of the fastest political rises in recent Indian politics. During the election campaign, he focused heavily on issues such as employment, education, anti-corruption measures, governance reforms, and youth empowerment. His campaign style and direct communication with voters helped him connect strongly with large sections of the electorate.
Political commentators say his first Delhi visit is also symbolically important because it marks his entry into the national political conversation. While his immediate focus remains governance in Tamil Nadu, many believe he could eventually emerge as an influential voice in broader opposition politics.
