Railway authorities temporarily suspended services on the affected stretch, leading to the cancellation, diversion, and rescheduling of several passenger and long-distance trains.
The incident occurred between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill in the Karjat-Lonavala section, an area known for its steep hills, sharp curves, and challenging terrain. Continuous rainfall over the past several hours loosened soil and rocks on the hillside, causing debris to fall onto the railway tracks. As a precautionary measure, railway officials immediately halted train movement to ensure passenger safety.
The Mumbai-Pune rail route is one of India’s busiest railway corridors, connecting the country’s financial capital with one of Maharashtra’s largest educational, industrial, and IT hubs.
