Iranian authorities have claimed that a US military strike targeted the perimeter of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in southern Iran on Thursday, adding that there were no immediate reports of casualties.
According to provincial officials, several locations in Bushehr Province were reportedly affected during the incident, including the outer area surrounding the country’s only civilian nuclear power plant. Other locations mentioned include a military installation near the town of Choghadak and a fishing pier in the southern part of the province.
Explosions Reported Near the Facility
Residents of Choghadak, located roughly 20 kilometers from the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, reported hearing multiple explosions during the day. Local authorities have not confirmed significant damage to the nuclear facility, and emergency teams continue to monitor the situation.
Officials stated that no deaths or serious injuries had been reported in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
Strategic Importance of Bushehr Plant
The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant is Iran’s only operational civilian nuclear power station. Built with Russian assistance, the facility currently operates one reactor, while two additional reactors remain under construction.
Because of its strategic significance, the site has drawn international attention whenever regional military tensions escalate.
Nuclear Safety Concerns Remain
The reported strike has renewed concerns about the safety of nuclear infrastructure in conflict zones. Earlier this year, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned that military activity near nuclear facilities could create serious safety risks and urged all parties to avoid actions that could threaten civilian nuclear installations.
Experts note that even if a reactor itself is not directly hit, nearby military activity can increase operational and environmental risks.
No Independent Confirmation Yet
At the time of publication, there has been no independent verification of Iran’s claims regarding the reported strike. US authorities had not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
Officials are continuing to assess the situation, while international observers are closely monitoring developments due to the potential regional and global implications of any incident involving nuclear infrastructure.
The latest developments come amid continued tensions in the Middle East, where military activities around critical infrastructure remain under close international scrutiny.
