At least 18 people lost their lives after a powerful explosion occurred at an unauthorised coal mine in Meghalaya, officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place in a remote mining area where illegal coal extraction was reportedly being carried out despite an existing ban.
According to local authorities, the explosion caused a partial collapse of the mine, trapping several workers inside. Rescue teams were rushed to the site and recovery operations continued for several hours. Most of the victims are believed to be daily-wage labourers who were working underground at the time of the blast.
Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion may have been triggered by the accumulation of flammable gases inside the mine. Officials said the site lacked basic safety measures, including proper ventilation and emergency exits, which worsened the impact of the accident.
The state government has ordered a detailed investigation into the incident and assured strict action against those involved in running the illegal mining operation. Authorities also acknowledged that illegal coal mining remains a major challenge in parts of Meghalaya, despite repeated enforcement drives.
Experts have once again raised concerns over worker safety and regulatory failures in areas affected by unlawful mining activities. They stressed that stronger monitoring and alternative livelihood options are necessary to prevent such tragedies.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over illegal mining practices in the region, with calls for stricter enforcement and accountability to ensure the safety of workers.
